How To Use Netscape Composer
With your BSC-Net Web Site
A Step-by-Step Tutorial...You'll have your home page up in no time.
This tutorial will guide you step by step through configuring Netscape Composer (included with Netscape Communicator software) to exchange
files
between your computer and your BSC-Net web site. In order to follow along
with us, you'll need to have Netscape Composer installed, and you'll need to be
connected to the internet.
Step 1 - Open Composer and Create a Simple Page
Before you may publish an html file to your web site with
Composer, you must either have a page already created, or
create a page. To create a page with Composer, follow these
simple steps:
With Composer open, choose File, New, Blank Page. Type in " This is a simple test "
Now let's choose File Save As, and name the html file on
your hard drive. (If this file is to be your homepage, you'd want to name it
default.html)
Once you have the file saved to your hard drive, you are
ready to publish the file.
Step 2 - Publish your File.
From the File drop down menu, Choose File, then choose Publish. The Publish Files dialogue box will open, and will look similar to
this:

- You'll need to enter the following settings in the Publishing
Location portion of the window:
Upload Files to this Location:ftp://users.bscn.com/
Username: Insert your BSC-Net User Name here.
Password: Insert your BSC-Net password here.
- If you wish, you may choose to save your password so that you
don't have to enter it each time you log in. If you wish to enable
this time saving feature, check the box marked "Save
Password"
- Enter the Page Title at the top of the window, and also the
Filename.
When you are finished entering these settings, click on the OK
button, and you will be connected to your BSC-Net Home Page server. The Security
Information box may open, if so, just click on continue, and your file will
upload.
Tips & Suggestions
- HTML Filenames are case sensitive.
We recommend you upload your files in lowercase only. When you write your html files, be sure and refer to any
image or other html files in lowercase also.
- Users Names and Passwords are case sensitive
If you signed up with BSC-Net, and chose a log-in name
of Joe, typing joe into the User Name when you publish
would not work. The same holds true for passwords.
Additional Features
In the lower half of the Publish Files dialogue box above, you'll
notice the section titled Other files to include.
Click on the radio button marked Files associated with this
page, if your page includes images or other files, such as
midi or wav files. The radio button marked All files in pages folder is a
handy feature. If you have more than one html file (web
page) you may keep them all in one folder on your hard
drive, and simply check this button to configure Composer
to upload all the pages at once.
Step 4 - Viewing your web page
To view the page you just uploaded, use the following URL in
your web browser: http://users.bscn.com/username/filename
Substitute username with your BSC-Net User Name. Substitute filename with the name that you gave your file.
(If you named your file default.html, then you only need to
enter the URL as follows: http://users.bscn.com/username
