So, your modem doesn't seem to be responding and you want to make sure that it is being detected.  The "Window Help" files is a good source of information to guide you through the process.  If you would rather listen to us, then follow the instructions below.

  1. Go to the Desktop.
  2. Single click on "Start".
  3. Go up to "Settings".
  4. Single click on "Control Panel".
  5. Find the "Modems" icon and double click on it.  You should see a window like the one pictured below.

  6. Highlight your active modem by single clicking on it.
  7. Single Click on "More Info".

If it returns a response, then Windows is detecting your modem.
If it says "no modem detected", then take your computer into a qualified service technician, yes BSC-Net will examine it.

We are usually flooded with calls after thunderstorms move through an area.  The usual cause is lightning or a power surge has gotten the modem.  If one is lucky, it only got the modem, and not the mother board too.

Many people say, "I had a surge protector hooked up, so how could that have happened"?

The answer is that a surge protector does not always work.  When thunderstorms move through your area, it is better to completely unplug your computer from the power source and the phone lines.
